Atlanta History continued...
Atlanta was founded in 1837 when the area was selected as the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad line. The city was first named Marthasville after the then-governor's daughter. The name was then changed to Terminus, obviously for its railroad significance. Soon after, the name was changed to Atlanta, which is the feminine of Atlanticas in the railroad. By the beginning of the Civil War, Atlanta was a major railroad hub, manufacturing center and a supply depot. Then, in 1864, General William Sherman made his famous “March to the Sea.” During his march, General Sherman burned nearly all of the railroad facilities, businesses and nearly two-thirds of the city's homes. This was an attempt by Sherman to cripple transportation and supply lines. Within four years of Sherman's attack, however, the capital was moved from nearby Milledgeville, where it had been seated since 1804, to Atlanta.
The city of Atlanta has been the home of many famous Americans. In 1886, a local drugstore, Jacob's Pharmacy, began selling a new headache and hangover remedy known as “Coca-Cola.” In 1891, entrepreneur Asa Candler paid $2300 to acquire the rights to the beverage. The following year, the Coca-Cola Company was founded. Atlanta has always been known as one of the centers of the civil rights movement in the United States. Atlanta is the birthplace of anti-segregationist leader the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many other civil rights leaders such as Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., who was the only southern mayor to testify before Congress in support of the pending Civil Rights Bill, called Atlanta home.
Atlanta is a city deeply rooted in historic values. Many die-hard southerners still consider Atlanta the heart of the Old Confederacy. However, Atlanta is a very modern city full of sports, pastimes and cultural activities. Atlanta is home to many professional sports teams: the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA, the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL, the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL. The city is also home to CNN, the Atlanta Cyclorama and Six Flags Over Georgia Amusement Park.
With its hot and humid summers and its beautiful springs, Atlanta is the perfect mix of modern culture and old southern comfort.
